Quinta Essentia: A Quintessential Jewelry Blog
“And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?” – Hamlet, William Shakespeare
I started making jewelry when I was 12 years old. In high school, I learned metalsmithing and I completely fell in love with the technique. By college, I knew that I wanted to keep jewelry in my life as a side hobby. But what would I call my eventual business?
When I was 18 I read Hamlet and fell in love with the word quintessence, a term he used in one of his monologs. Quintessence is a noun that means the essence of something in its purest state. I thought this description fit with my overall brand and design aesthetic.
The only problem? Quintessence Jewelry is already in use by a jewelry designer out of New York. When I started I wasn’t quite ready to abandon my name, so I held on for a few years. But with the birth of this site came the need to change my name. That being said I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to drop quintessence from my name, so I did a bit of research.
Back in the Middle Ages people believed the earth was made from four different elements: earth, air, fire, and water. They also believed the stars and planets were made of a fifth element, an element they referred to by its Medieval Latin name: quinta essentia, translated to “fifth essence.” This is where the word quintessence originated from, and how Fifth Essence Jewelry was born.
By day, I work in an office, so I design jewelry for other professional young women. I want you to add an accent accessory that will help you stand out at your office for all the right reasons. Pair my jewelry with an office dress or business suit, or a team jersey and some jeans. That’s how I wear my jewelry designs. That’s how this works. I’m bringing classy back one jewelry design at a time.
With this jewelry blog, I plan to share a plethora of tips for jewelry business owners and jewelry designers alike.
